Sledding, Snowshoeing, and Eating in the ADK

Sledding, Snowshoeing, and Eating in the ADK

Gear up, winter is here and the snow is plentiful.

1.

Get your sled ready

Snow is on the ground, trails are being groomed, and I can hear snowmobiles cruising around the neighborhood in the evening...it's snowmobile season! Everywhere you look people are digging out their sleds from wherever they spent the summer season, cleaning them off, tuning them up, and getting ready to ride. I bought my first snowmobile this past summer, so I have been a bit anxious waiting to ride. We always had snowmobiles growing up, but buying your first one and having it be your own is special.

2.

Perfect après

A perfect ski town cannot be solely defined by its on-piste reputation but rather by the socializing that commences once the skis are put away. Arguably every ski town's favorite French word, après-ski, translates to after ski and it is taken very seriously in Lake Placid. From shot-skis on the bar to sipping fine wine by a fire, after a day of skiing, you've earned it! No matter your après style, Lake Placid is ready to deliver.

Want to prove you're the best skier on and off the mountain? Follow these simple rules to find your own perfect après.

3.

Winter family fun

Sometimes the best part of vacation in the winter is getting to sit back, feet up, with a warm beverage in hand...just watching the kids have fun, burning their energy, and then falling into bed after a full day of fun activity. Well, Malone has you covered with all that fun activity that burns off that joyful energy. A bonus is that there are many options for family fun that is affordable. Check out my list below for some ideas. The fun is not limited to just the kids here. Adults can join in too.

4.

Do you know Whiteface Mountain?

Whiteface Mountain, New York’s fifth highest mountain, is a true year-round treasure that's begging to be explored. Whether you prefer to hit the slopes or simply sightsee from the top, Whiteface is a mountain for the people, accessible to anyone who wants to bask in its views. While the Veterans Memorial Highway is not open to vehicles during winter, there are still many ways to play on Whiteface Mountain. Check out five fun facts about Whiteface Mountain in the winter!

5.

A gourmand's paradise

Who really cares about eating when they are on vacation? Well, everyone of course. If you are like me, you want to hit the best local spots while you’re in town. You want to know where to get a good craft cocktail and where to eat a farm-to-table dinner. Downtown Saranac Lake has become a hub of unique and locally sourced restaurants. Here are some suggestions of where to eat while you’re in town. Each is a stop along the recently launched Adirondack Cuisine Trail, which means these spots are some of the best in locally sourced eateries.

6.

Snowshoe CATS

Since its beginning in 2009, the Champlain Area Trails' (CATS) ever-growing trail network has featured relatively short, easy-to-moderate hikes with big payoffs in outstanding views. CATS trails showcase a rich tapestry of scenic woodlands, wildlife habitats, pastoral farmland, historic villages and wetlands, ponds, rivers, and streams including the Boquet River and Lake Champlain.

When winter snow comes, many of the trails provide outstanding snowshoeing experiences. Here are some of the best.

7.

Shopping in Schroon

One of the challenges of the gift-giving season is how everyone on the gift list deserves something special. Yet, finding that something special can be a tough task in a world full of stuff that is all alike. The many artists of the Schroon Lake Region are up to that challenge. Here are five fine shops with unique ideas.
