Whiteface Region: family-friendly activities

When my kids and I head out on an adventure in a new place we always make a checklist of things we would like to do and see. The Whiteface Region has so much to offer in outdoor adventures that you could stay for days and not see some of the real gems of the area!

So, as a local, I thought I'd help you out and put together a tried-and-true sample checklist to help you plan your winter trip to the beautiful Adirondack mountains.

3.

Saranac Lake coffee shops

As I stroll through the village of Saranac Lake, a virtual Norman Rockwell or Currier & Ives painting, I keep waiting for the horse-drawn sleigh to pass by — the passengers in stocking caps and mittens, colorful quilts piled on top of them.

The horse-drawn sleigh never materializes, I shiver and zip up, and one word comes to mind — coffee.

Skate, ski, and snowshoe!

Wintertime gear includes so many innovative contraptions to strap onto your feet!

And... maybe you JUST got those brand new ones and you are DYING to try them out! Well, come on up to the heart of the Adirondacks and give your new skates, skis, or shoes their first trial run.

Lake Champlain ice fishing

The rumors are true: 2017 gave us a cold shoulder upon its departure. A blast of arctic air at the end of December and Lake Champlain’s liquid surface waved good by; blue became white as anxious ice fishing anglers applauded.

Talented local photographer, Shawn Michener, braved the sub-zero temperatures to capture some of the first pictures of the frozen surface off the Port Henry shore. He also got some great shots of a few happy ice fishermen on their first adventure of the season — a season that is off to a remarkable start.

Winter bucket list!

As the new year settles in, everyone has been announcing their New Year's resolutions. Instead of a resolution, I am putting together a new bucket list — it's a compilation of outdoor activities that I have been wanting to do, but never get around to.

My plan is to keep it realistic, and focus on the winter months. If I keep the activities fun, maybe I will stick with my bucket list and get some things done that I have been wanting to do.
