As the heat of summer cools and the sun sinks lower, the freshness of fall takes over and in the Adirondacks, it's simply extraordinary. This is nature's last, big, vibrant splash before winter, and the whole landscape celebrates.
It's easy to say that a place offers "something for everyone." But when it comes to fall in the Adirondacks, it's actually accurate. In celebration of the season, communities across the Adirondacks gather together to for unique events: fall colors, the harvest, our distinctive wildlife, art, and adventure. Add in the glorious, colorful landscape and you have a recipe for a spectacular fall adventure.
When it comes to events this fall, there really is something for everyone. Let's find the event that will make your fall getaway extra colorful and serve as the perfect complement to your fall roadtrip, hike, or cozy season getaway.
Lake Champlain Region
Thanks to its location that combines low elevation and the broad expanses of Lake Champlain, the colors are among the last to change here. Rather than hamper events, this seems to make the season of fun last longer. Some of our favorite events include:
- Adirondack Harvest Festival: Saturday, September 19. A classic, family-friendly event in Essex that features educational and interactive activities (this year's theme is pollinators!), a petting zoo, wagon rides, plenty of food, and more.
- Fort Ticonderoga's Heritage, Harvest & Horse Festival: Saturday, October 3. History meets flavor! Explore a farmers' market, learn more about the fort and its many animals, and enjoy the famous corn maze, where historic clues help lead the way out.
- Bike the Barns: Saturday, September 26. Cyclists, this one is for you! This supported ride takes in some of the prettiest scenery in the area, along with tasty stops at local farms.
Saranac Lake
Saranac Lake is a mountain town with a twist: history and the outdoors blend with an abundant dose of artists and art-centric activities and attractions. This is the community that happily calls itself "Decidedly Different," and some of its annual events highlight that cheerful designation.
- Saranac Lake Farmers' Market: Every Saturday through October 10. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., locals and visitors gather together in Riverside Park to sample fall flavors, live music from talented locals, and Adirondack-inspired art in the village's walkable downtown.
- Adirondack Canoe Classic, aka "The 90-Miler": September 11 – 13. This one really is a classic! Year after year, teams of paddlers (and some solo adventurers) gather to see the foliage from the water, paddling from Old Forge, all the way to Saranac Lake. Part spectator event, part party at the finish, all fun!
- SPUD FEST at Tucker Farm's Great Adirondack Corn Maze: Saturday, October 3. All hail the mighty potato! Fall is our favorite season at this tater farm with its themed corn maze. SPUD FEST includes horse-drawn wagon rides, ATV rides, live music, and a LOT of potato-ey goodness.
Lake Placid
Olympic adventures, big High Peaks views! Fall events in Lake Placid combine all of the best of this special community, with opportunity for world-class sports, harvest flavors, and arts and culture.
- ACHA Fall Faceoff Invitational Hockey: September 17 – 20. Lake Placid knows hockey and this event is a can't-miss, thanks to top teams from DI, II, and III men's and women's teams competing on historic Olympic ice.
- WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series: October 2 – 4. It doesn't get better than this! Elite racers will compete in the final Downhill and Cross-country World Cup races of the World Series, crowning the year's overall champions.
- Flaming Leaves Festival: October 10 – 11. One of the most unique events in the Adirondacks, this is your chance to combine food and drink, live music, and championship ski jumping against the backdrop of fall color.
- Lake Placid Film Festival: November 5 – 8. Forget Hollywood or Cannes. The annual LPFF has established itself as a hotspot for emerging films, award-winning shorts, industry chats, and silver screen celebrations.
Tupper Lake
Tupper Lake has a special, welcoming magic all its own: it's small but full of fun, quiet but never dull. And it knows how to pack a lot of flavor, excitement, and unique character into events. Connect with Tupper Lake this fall, where you'll feel at home in no time and the events are unforgettable!
- TROLLS: Save the Humans: Daily through October 31. Whether you're a troll aficionado or just looking for something different to do this fall, make your way to this event! The Wild Center's two-mile stroll through the woods is full of whimsy and wonder. *Due to demand, please purchase tickets ahead of time.
- Tupper Lake Explorer Scenic Train Ride: Every Sunday through October 25. Sit back, relax, and let the clickety-clack of train wheels guide you through Adirondack foliage you won't see any other way! This 1.5-hour ride on vintage rail cars takes you back in time and offers special views and a memorable, family-friendly experience!
- OkTupperfest: Saturday, September 26. This is an annual event that just gets better and better each year. The heart of the fest is the brewery lineup, with golden and amber colored brews perfectly matched to the lakeside foliage. Add in games and activities for kids (and kids of all ages), food, and live music!
Adirondack Hub
Easy to get to, the Adirondack Hub is an ideal spot to center your adventure and branch out into the region for a classic road trip! Events here let you explore the area's nooks and crannies, from the wilderness of Newcomb to the lakeside town of Schroon Lake.
- Teddy Roosevelt Weekend: September 11 – 13. In the Adirondacks, this is the most famous midnight ride! Roosevelt was a keen sportsman and big fan of the Adirondacks and actually became president while here! Meet TR himself (sort of), explore a Great Camp, enjoy a craft more, and more!
- Handlebarley Gravel Weekend: September 12 – 13. Have you noticed how popular fall is for cycling? With views—and routes—like ours, it's easy to see why! Grab your mountain bike for an event described as being "guaranteed some awesome dirt, equally amazing views, and a whole lot of fun."
- Fall for Schroon Festival & Car Show: Saturday, October 17. A fall favorite in a classic Adirondack town, this event blends fall flavor, color, and the excitement of a classic car show!
Whiteface Region
With the state's 5th-highest peak at its heart, the Whiteface Region and its picturesque small towns is a wonderful place to find fall events offering big fun and even bigger, colorful views! Hear the leaves crunch underfoot and get closer to this special corner of the 'dacks.
- Festival of Colors: Saturday, September 12. Color abounds at this family-oriented event, held in the center of Wilmington each fall. From the cupcake contest to the live music, vendors, and especially tasty local food, this is a relaxed way to welcome fall.
- Oktoberfest: September 26 – 27. When you're looking for your alpine fix, make this the event not to miss! From lager to lederhosen, Bavarian pretzels to pumpkins, Whiteface Mountain comes alive with fun. Don't miss the views from the gondola!
- UCI Mountain Bike World Series: October 2 – 4. This event is so big, it takes two regions to host! Whiteface Mountain hosts the downhill portion of this thrilling World Series event.
Experience Our Adirondacks
Hamilton County, home to the Experience Our Adirondacks region, is full of big outdoors, big adventures, and fall events full of big fun and big community spirit. In a region where the moose outnumber the traffic lights, events here have a distinctly wild flavor!
The Rustic Fair: September 11 – 13. The grounds of the Adirondack Experience museum come alive with rustic everything: furniture, decor, and artwork for a weekend that is truly all about Adirondack style.
Inlet Fall Festival: September 19 – 20. Pretty Fern Park is home to a weekend filled with vendors offering handmade goods, local food, and unique gifts, plus live music, entertainment, and cool fall brews!
Great Adirondack Moose Festival: September 26 – 27. Can you imitate a moose? Want to hear others try? Then this event in Indian Lake is for you. You'll also find other moose-themed activities and contests, guided hikes, a craft show, and more moosey goodness.
